Background

Easy and Possible Organization “EPO” in acronym, is a social, non-profit, non-governmental, non-political organization. EPO is formally registered with the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) with the certificate number 342/RGB/NGO/LP/07/2018, and posted in the official gazette No 25 of 24/06/2019).

It seeks to empower youth, women and children through four areas of interventions [Youth Empowerment, Health and Nutrition, Education and Environment] in a way they would feel educated, secure and with improved livelihood.

EPO owns a media house involving an FM radio station, Public Places Community Media [PPCM], an online newspaper, an online YouTube TV channel, besides various social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Snapchat, among others).

PPCM carry out all activities related to media services in public places and other necessary services to sustain and support its mission which is “to empower citizens through reliable and quality information accessibility and, support government and public policies communicated effectively to communities”. The PPCM include car parks and market voices, centers and camps voices as well as street displays and street screen ads.

Job title: Consultant Chief Editor.

Location: Kigali and Rubavu/Gisenyi.

Supervisor- you will be supervised by and reporting to the Managing Director of EPO Media House.

Available opportunities: 1 opening.

Preferred start date: 1st May 2024

Term: 6 months, renewable; depending on the performance and funds availability.

Job description

As Consultant Chief Editor, you will fulfill a vital role in (a) implementing the editorial direction of EPO’s media house and PPCM, and (b) developing these media. You will be responsible for

  • Overseeing the editorial processes, ensuring the high quality and relevance of our content, and fostering a collaborative and dynamic work environment for our editorial team, and
  • Developing and regularly following the PPCM up.

The Consultant Chief Editor will play this role in close collaboration with EPO’s Expert in charge of Development and Communication.

Main Responsibilities

The responsibilities are divided into two big categories namely editorial management and media development.

EPO PPCM Development

  • Formulation and implementation of a PPCM development strategy as well as its monitoring and evaluation.
  • Regular follow-up of PPCM in efforts to devise ways/strategies to continuously develop them.
  • Training of PPCM staff.
  • Identifying opportunities for projects to grow our media.
  • Contributing to writing project proposals designed to develop the media.
  • Stakeholder engagement.
  • Other tasks/duties to be assigned by the Supervisor.

Editorial Management

  • Editorial planning- working closely with the editorial team, to plan and implement editorial calendars; which involves assigning stories/topics, setting deadlines, and managing content production schedules.
  • Content quality control-keeping high editorial standards by reviewing and editing content for accuracy, clarity, coherence, relevance, adherence to our style, and deciding on appropriateness for broadcasting and publication.
  • Team leadership- managing the editorial team, providing motivation and inspiration, guidance, support, and feedback to ensure the professional growth and development of team members.
  • Working tightly with EPO’s Development and Communication Expert.
  • Collaboration-cooperating with EPO’s other departments such as marketing, design, and production to assure that content matches overall objectives and is effectively delivered to the audience.
  • Audience engagement- monitoring audience feedback and engagement metrics, to identify trends and preferences, and adjust editorial strategies accordingly to raise reader engagement and loyalty.
  • Industry awareness- remaining updated on industry trends, current events, and emerging topics relevant to our audience to inform editorial decisions and identify new opportunities for content development.
  • Legal and ethical compliance-ensuring that all content disseminated conforms to legal and ethical standards, including not breaking copyright laws, not committing defamation, and protecting privacy and maintaining accuracy, among others.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field [ Master’s degree constitutes an advantage].
  • Advanced skills in video production and photography [ holding certificates is an advantage]
  • Proven experience of at least 5 years in in editorial management, preferably in a senior leadership role.
  • Excellent writing, editing and communication skills.
  • Strong leadership and team management capabilities as well as insatiable passion in the field.
  • Deep understanding of media ethics, legal standards and industry best-practices.
  • Strategic planning and problem-solving skills.
  • Skills in writing proposals of media/public awareness projects.
  • Proficiency in language skills: Kinyarwanda and English especially.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Proficiency in content management and social media, particularly YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.
