Job-sharing Concept May Help Rwandan Vulnerable Youth’ NAR’s Guest

NAR, June 8th 2012, as a partial response to growing youth unemployment and its associated structural problems, Mme Colleen LaFontaine from Present Purpose Network based in the United States of America (USA) advised Never Again Rwanda to try Job-sharing Concept.

Colleen LaFontaine revealed this in Never Again Rwanda’s Experience-sharing Session with its esteemed guests on Thursday, 7th May 2012. Experience-sharing session is a tradition of Never Again Rwanda and it provides guests with extensive information relating on programmatic activities, programs, projects and strategic partnership opportunities.

Beneficiaries of this session have been universities, research, social entrepreneurship and non-profit organizations from North America, Europe, Africa and Asian countries.
While urging Never Again Rwanda to contextualize and adapt it in Rwanda, Colleen highlighted benefits of the concept—it is very practical with most vulnerable young women whose dreams have been drained by failure to meet basic human needs because of joblessness, it provides opportunities for mutual learning and flexibility to meet other basic socio-cultural commitments such as taking care of siblings, home management among others.

She reasoned, “Job-sharing reduces youth discontent and risk behaviors resulting from massive youth unemployment such as criminal tendencies.”
Mme LaFontaine further observed that the concept resonates with Never Again Rwanda’s Peacebuilding strategies and programs targeting youth and struggling young women. These include but not limited to peacebuilding program, governance and rights, socio-economic development.

In her admiration of NAR’s project Empowering Vulnerable Women Entrepreneurs (EYE), a USAID funded project, she said, “I sense very close links between the objectives EYE Project and applicability of Job-sharing concept especially with vulnerable girls and women. It might not be the best case scenario, but it can be a batter one”

Never Again Rwanda believes in multi-dimensional approaches to sustainable development and Peacebuilding. To this end, it conducts public debates, vocational trainings, leadership and entrepreneurships and Peacebuilding retreats bringing together youths from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Above activities are geared towards achieving a future where sustainable peace and development is driven by creative, involved, and critical-thinking youth.
Never Again Rwanda’s mission is to enhance youth’s capacity to analyze the root causes of conflicts, and facilitate dialogue among peers in order to generate ideas and activities that work towards sustainable peace and socio-economic development
