Background

Global Grassroots is an international 501(c)(3) non-governmental organization that supports conscious social change for women in East Africa. Our Academy for Conscious Change provides vulnerable women with mind-body trauma healing support, personal transformation practices, mindfulness-based leadership skills, social entrepreneurship tools, grant funding, and 12 months of high-engagement support so that they may launch their own civil society organizations, often focused on access to clean water and its ripple effects, benefiting women and girls. Our Young Women’s Academy offers motivated secondary school graduates 40 hours of training in conscious social change, seed funding, and venture coaching to launch a social impact project in their community before entering university. This year, Global Grassroots is in the process of shifting its international headquarters and operational leadership from the US to East Africa. As such, Global Grassroots is seeking a highly motivated, driven, entrepreneurial leader to serve as East Africa Director with at least 10 years of experience working in or on behalf of programs located in East Africa, perhaps having served previously as a Country Director, and who is excited by the prospect of deepening our impact, investing in our Africa leadership, and expanding the growth of women-led programs in Rwanda and Uganda.  The successful candidate will be a dynamic and mindful leader, who will direct our overall operations and program delivery, oversee all global partnerships, complete our process of US to Africa HQ transition, strategize the scaling of our impact, and manage a staff of seven in Rwanda and Uganda, working closely with our board, Development Director and President & Founder in the US. The ideal candidate will have a strong relationship orientation and communications skills; experience leading high performing teams; experience working across diverse stakeholders; experience managing through transition; and enthusiasm for, experience in, and knowledge of our key social issue areas: women’s empowerment, social entrepreneurship, clean water infrastructure, and mindfulness and personal transformation. Responsibilities will include:

 Management & Leadership

  • In collaboration with the Founder and Board, create and lead the multi-year strategy for strengthening and scaling Global Grassroots’ impact

  • Oversee and inspire all Global Grassroots staff in Uganda and Rwanda, and invest in their capacity and professional development

  • Oversee all operations, including financial management, communications, human resources, information management, compliance with legal and country

  • Oversee the delivery of all Global Grassroots programs and ensure their monitoring and evaluation and ongoing reporting for grants and regulatory agencies

  • Design and implement systems for evaluating progress toward strategic goals

  • Develop organizational budgets with program staff and oversee all Africa spending and financial reporting

  • Work closely with our staff and beneficiaries to ensure the wellbeing of our staff and build a strong, cohesive regional culture that reflects the values and approach of Global Grassroots as a mindful, learning organization dedicated to the leadership of grassroots women

  • Ensure lessons learned from the field are integrated into future programs and communications

Championship & External Relations 

  • Ensure compliance and good relations with all government entities

  • Liaise with program leaders from partner NGOs and government entities to increase Global Grassroots’ influence and visibility, and foster collaboration around shared interests

  • Identify and cultivate new networks and funding partnerships within East Africa in collaboration with the Board and Director of Development and US Operations

  • Represent Global Grassroots at convenings and with key global stakeholders, as needed, facilitating meaningful site visits and engagements with donors 

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Masters Degree, ideally an MBA, International Development or Non-Profit Management
  • At least 10 years of experience in a senior management role with a multi-country NGO with knowledge of, and experience in, international development programs and policies
  • Experience with and understanding of diverse East African cultures, ways of working, communities, and populations, in particular grassroots women
  • Strong project and personnel management experience
  • Strong experience growing the professional capacity of staff, developing program models, and scaling impact
  • Experience in facilitating groups, especially with respect to fostering self-sufficiency among vulnerable populations
  • Ability to work successfully on a team with diverse members and backgrounds
  • Demonstrated passion for international development supported by experience working on issues related to water access, gender, youth, trauma, and/or social entrepreneurship
  • Ability to mindfully and skillfully supervise others, bringing out their best capacities
  • Strong analytical skills, with experience in managing monitoring and evaluating programs and financial management
  • Proven ability to think strategically with a track record of turning ideas into action
  • Flexibility in responding to occasional heavy, peak workloads
  • Experience with Google and Microsoft Office programs including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Excellent, reliable communications and interpersonal skills
  • Capacity to manage a holistic and complex model and organization and achieve transformative results

The ideal candidate will:

  • Feel alignment with our mission and operating philosophy
  • Have prior work experience with and understanding of the water, sanitation, and hygiene sector, trauma-healing, and/or empowerment of vulnerable women and girls
  • Have exposure or practice of mindfulness or related contemplative practices
  • Embody a humble and mindful leadership style, that embraces listening and a collaborative, participatory approach to decision-making that honors the unique voices of all stakeholders
  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Kinyarwanda and exquisite attention to detail

This is a full-time, long-term position located in Kigali, Rwanda. The position has the opportunity to grow into a long-term organization-wide leadership position. the Salary range is USD $28,000 - $32,000 net, annually is commensurate with experience.
