About GAIN

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) was launched at the UN in 2002 to tackle the human suffering caused by malnutrition. GAIN is a global, Swiss-based foundation that mobilizes public-private partnerships and provides financial and technical support to deliver nutritious foods to those people most at risk of malnutrition.

GAIN’s purpose is to advance nutrition outcomes by improving the consumption of nutritious and safe food for all people, especially those most vulnerable to malnutrition. In particular, we aim to improve the consumption of safe and nutritious foods for—at a minimum—1 billion people over the next five years and target major improvements to food systems, resulting in more diverse and healthier diets for vulnerable people in countries where we work.

In Rwanda, GAIN implements a project called the Marketplace for Nutritious Foods (Marketplace). The Marketplace is a platform that fosters innovation and drives investment in the production, marketing, and consumption of nutritious foods made from locally-produced agricultural products.  The Marketplace provides access to knowledge, networks, and technical and financial assistance to help businesses in poor countries use local agriculture to contribute to the fight against malnutrition.

GAIN is seeking a consultant to work as Finance & Admin Officer to provide maternity cover (3 and half months).

Finance & Admin Officer – maternity cover

Description

Overall Purpose:

The Finance & Admin Officer (maternity cover) will support the team in the implementation of the Marketplace for Nutritious Foods in Rwanda. The position is strictly limited to maternity cover period (from 6th August 2018 to 14th December 2018).

Tasks and Responsibilities

 

  • Manage country finances; oversee that all financial transactions are made and that records are kept within GAIN’s and local legal requirements
  • Assist in the implementation of financial management procedures for the Rwanda office in line with GAIN policy
  • Ensure that all local taxes are paid in line with Rwanda tax rules
  • Ensure that the agreed procurement policy is followed for the purchase of Goods and Services
  • Oversee and provide monthly reports on expenditure and cash management
  • Manage internal and external audits as needed. Carry out general administration tasks in and around the office including management of office supplies, correspondence, organization of maintenance and repairs, dealing with suppliers, travel management etc. 
  • Set up and manage meetings with collaboration partners, businesses, government, etc.
  • Support the preparation and running of meetings, trainings and events
  • Support the development and management of contracts and granting agreements and manage the approval processes within the organization
  • Manage filing system. Liaise with GAIN colleagues to ensure all financial activities are performed within GAIN procurement guidelines
  • Assist with documentation and data entry of project activities in accordance GAIN and Donor monitoring/reporting requirements

Key Organizational Relationships

 

  • Reports to the Marketplace Manager, Rwanda, with leadership from Senior Manager, Agriculture and Nutrition
  • Liaise with the Head of Finance and wider Finance team as appropriate

 

 

Job requirements

Competencies (Skills and Attributes)

  • Effective oral and written communication skills in an environment requiring diplomacy and good judgment in managing interactions with individuals at all levels inside and outside an organization
  • Proactive with a commitment to quality and accuracy with close attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  •  High flexibility and occasional availability to work outside regular working hours
  • Able to prioritize, multi-task, and work well under pressure with frequent deadlines
  • Ability to work without close supervision
  •  Computer literacy with excellent MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint skills.  Proficiency in QuickBooks required.
  • Basic finance and accounting skills.
  • Fluency in spoken and written Kinyarwanda and English is required
  • Language skills in French are desirable
  •  Ability to travel on occasion
  • Ability to work legally in Rwanda

Experience

  • 3-5 years of work experience as a finance and administration officer or equivalent
  •  Experience in working in an international organization and in an international development context is a plus

Education

  • Diploma or degree in Finance/ office management/ business administration or related fields
  • Basic accounting and financial management courses are a plus

Other Requirements

  • Willingness and ability to travel occasionally in-country
