1. About Plan International

Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organization (non-profit) that advances children’s rights and equality for girls. We believe in the power and potential of every child. But this is often suppressed by poverty, violence, exclusion, and discrimination. And its most affected girls. Working together with children, young people, our supporters, and partners, we strive for a just world, tackling the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children. We have been operating in Rwanda since 2007.

I. ETHICS AND IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS

Plan International Rwanda is fully committed to the gender responsive safeguarding of all children and young people from all forms of violence. We take very seriously our responsibility and duty to ensure that we, as an organization, and anyone who represents us does not in any way harm, abuse, or commit any other act of violence against children and young people or place them at risk of the same.

Project Background

As a child centered community development organization, Plan International Rwanda has developed initiatives to enhance child rights with emphasis to protection in various communities. Through Germany National Office (GNO), Plan international Rwanda has secured 36 months (3 Years) project “Access to Quality education and ECD Services in Rwanda” that aims at improving quality education and ECD services in Rwanda for girls and boys aged 0-6 years (1,550 boys and 1,600 girls) in Nyaruguru and students from P4 to S3 (200 Boys and 250 Girls) in Bugesera District.

Project Objective

 Overall Objective:

To contribute to improved quality of education from the early years up to secondary school by tackling the root causes of dropout and repetition.

Specific Objectives:

To strengthen a safe school environment for girls and boys to stay in school and complete it.

To empower girls and boys to make safe decisions about their SRHR.

To build a strong foundation for development and learning for children aged 0-6 years.

Rationale

In the past years, it was revealed that girls, both in and out of school, were at high-risk teenage pregnancy. Plan International Rwanda through the project, “Access to quality education and ECD services in Rwanda project”, in collaboration with the districts of Bugesera and Nyaruguru through its education department and the local community structures, Plan International envisions a world that values girls, promote their rights and ends injustice. Girls get equal is a global movement to transform power relation so that girls everywhere LEARN, LEAD, DECIDE and THRIVE. With this line, girls can’t reach their goals with surrounded challenges of high frequency of unemployment, early and unwanted pregnancies, etc...

In line with this global ambition, Plan International Rwanda intends to support the teen mothers that graduated from VTC in technical courses like tailoring and hair dressing. In total 81 (49 in Nyaruguru and 32 in Bugesera) graduated in tailoring and 15 from Bugesera graduated in Hair dressing. Plan international Rwanda intends to support these teen mothers with startup kits after the technical training (after the completion of 6 months training) and one-month internship. Plan international Rwanda in collaboration with the district authorities will identify suitable places where these teen mothers can work in form of cooperative groups. If resources are available, the plan will provide start-up accommodation for at least 3 months.

2. Expected key results:

The teen graduands from TVET/VTC were occupied with the business, practicability of acquired knowledge and skills which will trend to their wellbeing improvement. The following is expected from them:

  • Increase their financial capacity using the skills acquired from the training
  • Start income generating activities using the incomes acquired from the start-up kits
  • Grow or improve their business by developing their skills and new innovations
  • Be safe and secure from SGBV and earn incomes to protect their children.
