Executive summary

Duhozanye  is a  Non- Governmental  Organization  legally operating in Rwanda granted legal personality No 131/11 of 2003 whose mission is“ to ensure the socio-economic rehabilitation of widows and orphans of the genocide in order to integrate them into everyday life so that they can particularly striving for self-reliance and generally participate in the development of the country”.

Background

In partnership with ActionAid Duhozanye is implementing  FLOW2 project ” Funding Leadership and Opportunities for Women Promoting opportunities for women ” aims to increase the income of 6,000 women and their ability to control their income, through practicing Climate Resilient Sustainable Agriculture, better access to markets and reducing, recognizing and redistributing their Unpaid Care Work. The project focuses on the following four interlinked areas;

  • The empowerment of women at household and community level, raising awareness of and claiming their rights;
  • The recognition, redistribution, and reduction of Unpaid Care Work which keeps women in the private sphere;
  • The increase in women’s access to productive resources, markets and knowledge of sustainable practices, which will ensure women continue to have a livelihood in the longer term, and;
  • Effecting policy and institutional change to provide an enabling environment that supports women’s economic empowerment.

Many poor communities depend on women to grow most of the food they eat, yet women farmers struggle with a severe lack of extension services, credit, inputs, and productive assets. In many countries, agriculture provides the livelihood for 80% to 90% of the population. Women make up the majority of smallholder farmers in most developing countries. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that at least 80% of rural smallholder farmers worldwide are women. Smallholder farmers produce as much as 90% of the food grown in Africa and 50% of the world’s food but many of them go hungry themselves and see their families go hungry. Empowering women smallholder farmers to produce more food for local consumption and local markets is the best path to economic recovery and resilience from disasters and crisis. It is also the foundation for global food security.

It is with this regard that Duhozanye in partnership with ActionAid/FLOW2 project would like to develop “manual for Women Smallholder Farmer Business School to train women farmer and processing groups on farming as a business”. The manual should provide the training facilitators with clear and customized step-by-step guidelines for the various stakeholders
