Rwanda is a hilly country where most of the cultivation area is on hillside with an incline of more than 60% slope. Currently, agriculture is growing at 5.8 per cent per year and employs 80 per cent of Rwandans of the population and contributes 33% of GDP and 70% of export revenues (EICV III). Household average land sizes are 0.3 hectare fragmented amongst several parcels. Population pressure compels for cultivation, while most of the hillside areas exceeds recommended slopes for cultivation and subjected to severe soil erosion and low productivity. In order to sustain cultivation and productivity on such steep-slopes, considering even the most costly soil conservation measures; LWH become necessity not a choice.
