As we continue to expand our operations, we are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Field Engineer to support the deployment, maintenance, and optimization of our network infrastructure while ensuring exceptional service delivery to our customers.

ROLE OVERVIEW

The Field Engineer is responsible for carrying out field operations, network deployment, maintenance, and technical support activities while ensuring compliance with service standards, safety regulations, and customer service level agreements (SLAs). The role requires frequent fieldwork, technical troubleshooting, project supervision, and coordination with both internal and external stakeholders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise telecommunications infrastructure projects during implementation. 
  • Prepare and submit project progress reports. 
  • Maintain accurate project documentation. 
  • Conduct site acquisition activities for new network deployments. 
  • Participate in project planning and implementation. 
  • Perform desktop studies and on-site technical surveys. 
  • Configure, test, and commission network services. 
  • Execute customer installations and supervise contractors. 
  • Carry out preventive maintenance activities. 
  • Diagnose and resolve network faults within agreed service levels. 
  • Escalate complex technical issues when necessary. 
  • Perform corrective maintenance activities. 
  • Manage spare parts and field equipment inventory. 
  • Monitor and maintain network performance. 
  • Ensure customer satisfaction during service delivery. 
  • Supervise contractors and ensure compliance with contractual obligations. 
  • Respond to interdepartmental technical requests. 
  • Coordinate with regulatory authorities and wayleave stakeholders. 
  • Ensure compliance with Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) standards during field operations. 
  • Ensure compliance with telecommunications regulations and technical standards. 
  • Ensure adherence to applicable local authority regulations and by-laws. 

KEY DECISIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITY

The successful candidate will be accountable for:

  • Selecting the most appropriate deployment approach based on site conditions. 
  • Determining suitable tools, equipment, and systems for field operations. 
  • Managing network infrastructure and field equipment inventory. 
  • Maintaining network performance and service availability. 
  • Delivering high-quality technical support and customer service. 
  • Ensuring safe working practices for employees and contractors. 
  • Supporting the successful delivery of network projects. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field. 
  • Professional certifications in Optical Networking, IP Networking, or related technologies are an added advantage. 
  • Minimum of 3–5 years' experience in telecommunications field operations, network deployment, or infrastructure maintenance. 
  • Experience working with fiber optic infrastructure and civil works. 
  • Hands-on experience with SDH, DWDM, IP/MPLS, wireless, and satellite technologies. 
  • Experience working with telecommunications power systems. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • Strong project supervision and coordination skills. 
  • Sound knowledge of telecommunications infrastructure deployment, including fiber optics, power systems, shelters, cabinets, and transmission equipment. 
  • Thorough understanding of SDH, DWDM, IP/MPLS, wireless, and satellite communication technologies. 
  • Familiarity with cloud technologies, virtualization, and modern digital infrastructure solutions. 
  • Ability to translate customer requirements into practical technical solutions. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams. 
  • Leadership skills with the ability to supervise technicians and contractors. 
  • Strong organizational and planning abilities. 
  • High level of initiative, professionalism, and accountability. 
  • Ability to assess technical risks and make sound recommendations to management. 

PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP

Membership with the Institute of Engineers Rwanda (IER) or another recognized professional engineering body will be an added advantage.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Frequent travel to customer sites and project locations. 
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. 
  • Participation in an on-call support rotation when required. 
  • Occasional work outside normal business hours to support network operations and emergency maintenance.
